Green Peter and Detroit Kokanee Fishing
Green Peter and Detroit Kokanee Fishing is one of Oregon’s great Summer Fishing opportunities. There are many lakes in Oregon that produce or are stocked with kokanee. Green Peter and Detroit Reservoirs are the two I run my guide business on. Set in the cascade mountains they are very scenic. With camping areas for tents or RV’s on them or near by. Detroit Lake is a mountain Reservoir 46 miles east of Salem Oregon on Hwy 22. It cover covers 3500 acres. is 11 miles east of Sweet home Oregon off of Hwy 20 and covers 3720 acres. The differences between Green Peter and Detroit kokanee fishing are few. The limit at Detroit is 5 fish whether trout or Kokanee. The Kokanee at Detroit are bigger about 14-18 inches. At Green Peter the kokanee are 11-14 inches but the limit on Green Peter is an impressive 25 kokanee and 5 trout. Both locations have Chinook salmon. They are not often caught but my largest was 16 pounds.
Both are mainly trolling fisheries. My boat is a 24ft Koffler open sled. A big stable boat with new motors. Quality Garmin and Lowrance electronics and 4 Cannon Down riggers. I mainly troll with Lamiglas and Tica Rods and Shimano and Tica Reels. I use mainly Shasta Tackle Sling Blades and Mack’s Lure dodgers wiggle hoochies and wedding ring spinners tipped with scented white corn.
Green Peter and Detroit Kokanee fishing are not the only fishing opportunities in this great state. Summer has Chinook salmon Fishing on the coastal rivers and in the ocean. Summer Steelhead in the Santiam river. Nearshore Halibut and my favorite bottom fishing which is almost always done out of Depoe Bay. Your limit is 2 ling cod and 7 other rock fish and I am normally back at the docks with limits of these wonderful fish by 11:00 am. lastly is crabbing. Tidally dependent and done out of Newport Oregon. Limits are 12 crab per person. limits are normal. Crabs in the coastal markets are $20 per crab. It does not take you long to make to trip pay for itself.
